What's the minimum auto insurance required in Texas?

Texas requires liability insurance of at least 30/60/25 — $30,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage coverage, per accident.

What those numbers mean

  • $30,000 — maximum your insurance pays for one person's injuries in an accident you cause

  • $60,000 — maximum total for all injuries in that same accident, shared among everyone hurt

  • $25,000 — maximum for damage to someone else's vehicle or property

What minimum coverage doesn't cover

  • Your own medical bills

  • Damage to your own vehicle

  • Theft, vandalism, or weather damage

  • Single-vehicle accidents or hit-and-run damage to your car

What happens if you drive without insurance

  • First offense: fine of $175–$350 (Tex. Transp. Code §601.191(b))

  • Repeat offense: fine of $350–$1,000, plus possible license/registration suspension and vehicle impoundment

How to get covered

  1. Get a quote — vehicle and license details

  2. Choose liability-only or add coverage beyond the state minimum, depending on your needs

  3. Buy the policy — coverage starts as soon as it's bound
