Does a lapse in coverage raise your rate?
Not directly. Alinsco doesn't charge a surcharge or penalty just for having a lapse in coverage. But a lapse longer than 30 days means you won't qualify for the Proof of Prior Discount, so your premium could end up higher than a driver with continuous coverage.
How a lapse affects your discounts
-
Proof of Prior Discount. Requires a lapse of 30 days or less to qualify for the 6-, 12-, or 24-month discount tiers.
-
Advance Quote Discount. Requires at least 6 months of prior coverage and zero lapse.
-
In-Agency Discount. Also requires you to qualify for the Proof of Prior Discount.
A lapse of more than 30 days can knock you out of all three.
What to expect with a lapse
-
You can still get covered — a lapse doesn't disqualify you
-
Shorter lapses (30 days or less) protect your discount eligibility
-
Longer lapses mean a higher premium, since you'll miss out on prior-insurance discounts
Steps to protect your rate
-
Gather any proof of prior insurance you have, even if your lapse was short
-
Get a quote before the lapse grows any longer — the sooner you buy, the better your odds of staying under 30 days
-
Ask which discounts you qualify for based on your exact lapse length
-
Buy your policy — a shorter lapse now means a better rate going forward
