What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company files with Texas DPS to prove you carry the state's required minimum auto insurance. It's not a type of insurance itself — it's a filing attached to a regular policy, usually required after a DUI, a license suspension, or certain other violations.

Why the state requires it

After a DUI, a suspension, or certain other violations, the state considers you a higher-risk driver — statistically more likely to be in an accident that causes damage to someone else. Rather than keep you off the road entirely, the state allows you to drive again, but wants a guarantee that you're carrying insurance. Insurance companies already report insured vehicles to the state, but an SR-22 is a tighter form of verification: it's your insurer formally certifying to Texas DPS that you carry at least the state's minimum required liability limits.

What happens if your policy lapses

If your policy is canceled or lapses while an SR-22 is required, your insurer is required to file a form called an SR-26 — essentially notifying the state that the SR-22 has been canceled. Once DPS receives that SR-26, your license can be suspended immediately. Reinstating means paying a fee and getting a new policy with a fresh SR-22 filed, and your original required period doesn't shorten because of the gap. Keeping your policy active without a lapse is the only way to avoid this cycle.

What to expect

  • An SR-22 must typically stay on file for 2 years from the date of the conviction or judgment

  • Your insurer files it with Texas DPS

  • Not every carrier offers SR-22 filings, so confirm this is included when you get a quote

  • A lapse triggers an SR-26 filing and can suspend your license immediately

How to get an SR-22

  • Get a quote from a carrier that offers SR-22 filings

  • Buy the policy — the SR-22 is filed with Texas DPS as part of binding coverage

  • Maintain continuous coverage for the full required period — a lapse restarts the risk of suspension, reinstatement fees, and a fresh filing
