Halloween is quickly approaching and people everywhere are preparing for swarms of candy craving costumed kids roaming the streets. Although this is an exciting and fun-filled holiday, there are also some safety measures that you need to take seriously. This night comes with a lot of responsibility for parents whose kids are out wandering the neighborhood and it’s important that you take certain precautions beforehand. Never Trick-Or-Treat Alone – Depending on the age of your child, you should not send them out without adult supervision. If you feel that they are old and responsible enough, make sure that they are traveling with at least 3 other friends and that they know to check in with you every hour.
Check your Child’s Candy – Unfortunately, there are a lot of crazy people out there who do bad things. Even though people brush the idea of a stranger giving out tampered Halloween candy, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Go through your child’s candy and make sure that everything is unopened and devoid of any suspicious signs. If there’s a particular candy in there that you’ve never heard of before, either Google to make sure it’s authentic or throw it away. Oh yeah, and toss out any apples you may find, just in case!
Avoid Costume Mistakes – When putting together your child’s costume, try to avoid anything that has a mask along with any weapons as accessories, such as toy guns, swords, etc. Make sure that their costume is a reasonable short length so that they’re not dragging anything on the ground. Also, it’s highly recommended that they’re wearing comfortable shoes and that they’re equipt with a flashlight for emergencies.
Plan a Route – Before sending your child out on their quest for candy, sit down with them and plot out a safe and nearby route they can take through your neighborhood. Avoid any side streets or alleyways and instead, stick to roads that they’re familiar with and you know will be densely populated. This will ease your concern and will eliminate the risk of them getting lost.
Be Aware on the Road – It’s best to try and avoid driving at all on Halloween night, but if you must, be on high alert for any children crossing the streets. Drive at a low speed through neighborhoods and keep your taillights on at all times. It’s important to tell your child to avoid j walking in the street and to keep horseplay on the sidewalks to a bare minimum. Warn your child about the dangers of talking to strangers as well and advise them to call you immediately if one confronts them.
