5 Ways to Improve Gas Mileage

Summer is quickly approaching and that means family vacations! However, it also means gas prices are bound to gradually increase. While vacation driving does put miles on your car, a car that is guzzling gas empties your pockets. This may seem like a lose-lose situation. However, no matter what kind of car you drive, you can obtain better fuel economy than you’re getting right now. How you ask? There are multiple tips you can follow that will help you improve your miles per gallon and put more money in your bank account. Check out these helpful tips on how you can get better fuel economy.

Check Your Tire Pressure – This should become a weekly ritual if it’s not already. Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance on the road, which will decrease fuel efficiency. Fully inflated tires = better gas mileage.

Use Normal Octane Gasoline – This may sound like a no-brainer, but steer clear of mid-grade or premium gas when you’re at the pump. There’s really no need to purchase this “special” type of fuel. Other than costing more, the only thing it does is reduce the chances of detonation.

Lighten the Load – Do you have a bunch of junk in your car and trunk that’s been sitting there for who knows how long? This could be hurting your mpg. Make sure to remove any extra weight from your car – including your roof rack, which can add drag to your car.

Change your Oil and Air Filter Regularly – Having fresh oil and air filters doesn’t necessarily have an effect on your mpg, but it does improve your car’s acceleration and keeps your engine healthy.

Reducing Speed – Everyone loves to drive fast, but at what cost? Your gas mileage can drop off as much as 15% between driving below 65 mph and above 65 mph. If you go above 65 mph, you’re using more engine power and burning more fuel to overcome drag. Reducing your speed may take longer to get to your destination, but it will vastly improve your fuel economy!
